"This ain’t a god damn game. Get in, make the kill, and get out."

– Leila “The Veteran” Boudet

The Veteran, also known by her real name, Leila Boudet, is a hunter in the Garden. Her unique power is Orbital Strike, and her default loadout is a Grenade Launcher and a Carbine.

The Veteran’s deep knowledge of her environment makes her a dreadful opponent. She will make sure to find every scavenger in the garden, even those who mastered the art of hiding. Not a single scavenger will be able to make a better life for themselves, especially not on Leila’s watch.

Description[ | ]

Leila Boudet is a born soldier, who fought in the Thousand Day War and the Underground combat rings that followed. She has seen all sides of battle, lost many friends and seen things that no-one should see.

She takes her role as a Hunter very seriously, destroying Scavengers as quickly and simply as possible.

Big guns, big explosions, dead Scavs. Job done.

Background Story[ | ]

Leila Boudet has been fighting for most of her life. In her early twenties, seeing that conflict was likely, she signed up to be part of the Unity armed forces. She was training in Vancouver when the Thousand Day War began. Her unit moved north and what remained of it, when the Collective's advance ceased, became the start of the legendary 'Death's Heralds'. She quickly made a name for herself, due to her prowess and valor in the unit's covert operations.

Later in the war, having advanced through the ranks and fought in many other theaters, she was part of Unity's final attack, at Dead Dog Creek, and the subsequent advance towards Brisbane.

She was injured in the heavy fighting but tried to convince her commanding officer that she was able to continue. He insisted that the war was essentially won and that she could return to France, to recuperate. "Although the fighting will be over," he said, "we'll need people like you to keep the peace."

Her flight had not long left, heading back to the FOB at Port Moresby, when there was a massive flash behind them and the plane was disabled by an EMP: in a final attempt to stop the Unity advance, The Divided had launched a devastating nuclear barrage against the Unity forces, wiping out 90% of the troops in Australia, on both sides.

After she was rescued from her ditched plane, and learned of the deaths of all her brothers and sisters in arms, Boudet was returned to France and hailed as a hero - one of the few who came back, relatively unscathed, from mankind's darkest hour.

Plagued by survivor's guilt, and memories of her fallen comrades, Boudet retreated from public life, as peace broke out and soldiers all over the world found themselves without purpose.

Some of those soldiers started underground events where, using army surplus weapons and battle suits, they would fight for the entertainment of rich fans.

Word of these events reached Boudet, and she soon sought them out and signed up. Whether it was a way to take back control of her life, to vent her anger and guilt, or a way to die in battle, she's never let on. Whatever the reason, she was soon one of the top combatants in the secretive bloodsport.

When The Gauntlet began providing its Hunters with weapons, and most of the Underground's fighters moved over into the mainstream, Boudet retired again. She had no interest in "playing a game", and it wasn't until the Hunters took control of the Council of 3, turning The Gauntlet into The Bloodharvest in the process, that she emerged once more.

Now in her early sixties, she is wholly subscribed to the ideology that Hunters are gatekeepers, preventing the unworthyfrom swarming The Enclaves, and protecting those within. She hunts down her prey with efficiency, never one to drag out the hunt for its own sake. She goes in, gets the job done and leaves, taking no pleasure in her task. Her weapon choices reflect this attitude - she favors high explosives that cause a lot of damage over a wide area. She's not here to show off her accuracy - she's here to kill Scavengers.

Perks[ | ]

Icon Name Effect Description
Bring a Friend icon Bring a Friend Chance to activate a second nearby Drone when activating a Drone/ Consecutive failures increase this chance. (+3 chance) This one's still experimental, but I've come up with a way to channel the energy from a power core into more than one drone at a time. It doesn't always work, but the intelligent tracking system learns from its mistakes and should get more accurate the more you use it.
Turn up the Heat icon Turn up the Heat Increases the Explosion Radius of Rattler RX35 Grenades (+3 radius) The Garden's control systems are very versatile - they need to be, to cope with high-speed printing. Although it's not really using them the right way, I can force them to increase oxygen levels in areas where an explosion is imminent, increasing the yield.
File:Wake me Up icon.jpg Wake me Up Improve drone reactivation time (10% cooldown) When Scavengers damage a drone, it takes awhile for the auto-repair systems to kick in and reboot it. if I make some changes to the codes executed, I should be able to have the drone prioritize its repairs better.
File:Impulsive Maneuver icon.jpg Impulsive Maneuver Cooldown reduction on Orbital Bombardment Those orbital weapons are old, both in design and age. They need time to recharge before firing again and there's not much to be done about that. I could redirect their orbits, so more are over the Garden at any one time? Effectively, you'll be able to call in a strike more often.
File:Sword and Shield.jpg Sword and Shield Chance when a Drone is activated that it gains a shield Drones actually have a shield system in place, as the design is based on fighting units from the war. It's rarely used though, so Scavengers have a greater chance to fight back. I could set it to reactivate occasionally? Keep them on their toes?
File:About to Blow icon.jpg About to Blow Hacked Crates explode (but do not Reveal) There is a lot of stored up energy in crates, release that energy all in one go and you have an explosive. It's easier than you think: all you need to do is hack the crate's systems so that interfacing by a Vambrace causes a runaway energy cascade, and a nice surprise for the Scavenger.

Unique Bonuses[ | ]

Icon Name Effect Description
No Way to Hide icon No Way to Hide Shock reveals Scavengers for a short time after they have been shocked Your Shock system dumps a lot of energy into the surrounding area and, hopefully, Scavnegers. That energy takes some time to dissipate from the human body and I can set your battle suit's systems to track it, revealing the Scavenger for a while.
Corrupted Blood icon Corrupted Blood Shooting the Bloodpile hacks it similar to Crate hacking The blood pile is a complex machine and, like most complex machines, it can be hacked. The best part is that most Scavengers don't have a clue about this, so their faces will be a picture when they get revealed.
